- This study aims at describing the differences in increasing critical thinking ability and emotional intelligence of students based on realistic mathematics an approach with conventional learning. The study was quasi-experimental. The population is secondary school students in Medan. The instrument used in this study consists of tests of critical thinking and mathematical description of the emotional intelligence scale. Data were analyzed by using a qualitative-descriptive technique ANOVA. The findings show that realistic mathematics instruction can enhance critical thinking ability and emotional intelligence of students. Thus, a further suggestion is that (i) Realistic Mathematics Education is used as an alternative method to improve the students’ critical thinking ability and emotional intelligence, (ii) the emotional intelligence of students in mathematics is enhanced in order to use realistic mathematics approach through focus group discussions.
