Abstract:
The mechanism of iron removal from Al-Si alloys by metallic dopants was studied with the aim of improving the structure, mechanical and physical properties. The mechanism of iron removal from Al-Si alloys was established with the results of chemical analysis for iron content and property tests obtained based on sludge formation by applicable dopants. The cast alloys were analysed for iron content at Springboard Research Laboratory, Awka using Atomic Spectrometer Absorption technique and the mechanical and physical properties determined using standard equipment and techniques. The results obtained showed that the ratio of iron to cobalt equals 1:1 gave a decrease of iron from 1.7% to 0.44% thereby increased strength by 42%. It was found that the precipitation of iron-rich intermetallic phases such as Al15(FeMn)3Si2, Al15(FeCo)4Si2 and their removal from the melt as sludge resulted to iron removal from Al-Si alloys. Microstructure analysis buttressed the great structure and property changes observed with elements addition. In addition to mechanical properties, the result also showed a correlation between iron removal and physical properties.
